How to shop for the right home for your rackmount components

Choosing the right home for your network, security or electrical components can sometimes be just as hard as shopping for a home for you and your family. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but in reality the decision process is similar. Here are just some of those determining factors that should be considered when “house hunting.”

Location, Location, Location – Anyone in real estate will tell you that house hunting is all about the location. When choosing a network rack, it is essential to think about where the rack will live. To start, determine how much space you have to work with and where the rack will be installed. Then you should be able to decide whether you need a wall mount or free standing rack solution. For example, if you are installing a security system in a small office, floor space is usually at a premium. Therefore a wall mount solution, such as the Phantom Class® Wall Mount Corner Cabinet, would be ideal.

Security – Just like any sensible home shopper, determining the security of the home is crucial. Most network/security racks need to be secure to some extent, and with the evolving data privacy laws, security requirements are getting tougher and tougher. (For more information on data security, check out our article on PCI Compliancy.) If your installation is taking place in a secure data closet or room, you may opt for an open frame rack, such as a 4-post or pivot frame rack. But if a secure room is not available and the installation will be taking place in an unrestricted area, you may want to consider a secure, locking enclosure, such as our Security Wall Mount Cabinet. Whether you are looking to restrict physical access with locking doors or restrict viewing access with solid steel doors, Kendall Howard has a variety of options to choose from.

Environment/Climate – When choosing the right rackmount system or rack enclosure, not only should you evaluate the physical location, but the environment and/or climate of the selected location as well. Depending on the space, heating or cooling may be a consideration. Determine whether your rack or cabinet will need fans or additional ventilation to help promote proper airflow. This typically only becomes an issue if you are installing high heat generating equipment within cabinets because the hot air needs to be removed to prevent overheating. If this is the case, our entire line of wall mounts and free standing enclosures are compatible with our fan assembly kits and rackmount fan panels.

Finances – Like many of us, our budget sometimes has a bigger influence on our purchases than we would like to admit. However, that’s a reality we all have to face. Here at Kendall Howard we have a rack solution to compliment just about any budget. If you’re on more of the Ramen noodle type budget, don’t worry, we have the economical line of LINIER® Wall Mount and Full Size Server Cabinets for you. But if a budget isn’t a factor for you, our line of SOHO Server Cabinets or Modular Portable Racks are the premium Kendall Howard quality solution that IT technicians cannot get enough of.

Overall Look – Lastly, the overall look of the rackmount system or rack enclosure can be a major factor to consider. Just like when preparing to house hunt, you probably have generated a long list of must-have features. For instance, if you have your heart set on a colonial home, the single story bungalow will never compete. Sometimes looks do matter! Because network/security installations are occurring more and more in open office environments, having an aesthetically appealing rack solution is important. That is why Kendall Howard has gone the extra step with many of our racks to design clean lines, rounded corners, and visually appealing solutions. Just check out the Modular Wall Mount Racks for example. This simple, yet heavy duty, wall mount rack features an appealing look that also provides much of the rack’s weight capacity. Muscle and beauty all in one!

Although I may have slightly stretched the comparison between rack shopping and house shopping, I think you will find that these five factors will help you narrow down your search and help you find the right rackmount solution sooner.
